Flowers, chocolate, candlelit dinners in expensive restaurants… Every year they top the lists of most popular Valentine's gifts, which seems to suggest that we all have similar ideas on what "romance" really is. But do we?
According to a 200 survey on romance, the answer may be a resounding "no". According to respondents, women in particular are more likely to take the view that it's the thought that counts, appreciating smaller, more personalised gifts much more than extravagant, but impersonal ones. That means that home-cooked meals win out over fancy restaurants, and if you're buying flowers, you better make sure you put some thought into your choice!
Take roses, for example. We all know that red roses are a symbol of true love, whether you choose to send a dozen or just one. They're the classic love token, and almost guaranteed to put a smile on the face of the recipient. The problem is, though, that they're not particularly personal. Anyone can buy roses, and one bunch can end up looking very much like another.
That’s why it's important to give your roses – and any other gifts - a more personal touch. At Roses by Design, for example, real, fresh roses can be printed with your loved one's name, a personal message, or even an image of the two of you together. It's the little touch that shows you've gone the extra mile to make sure that your romantic gesture is truly personal, and tailored to the recipient.
Here are some other ideas for the perfect romantic night in:
1. Cook your partner dinner
Expensive restaurants and nouvelle cuisine have their place, but when it comes to romance, nothing beats a home-cooked meal. You may not be a Michelin-starred chef, but the fact that you've taken the time to find out what the other person most likes to eat, and to cook it yourself, will speak volumes.
2. Make a mix CD
Looking for some background music for that romantic meal? You could go out and buy "The World's Greatest Love Songs" on CD, but it will mean more to the person you're hoping to impress if you take the time to record a CD of your own, with all of his or her favourite tracks.
3. Say it with flowers
While a bunch of flowers or a Single Red Rose can be a wonderful romantic gift, don't forget that flowers also make great table decorations for that romantic meal for two you're planning! For a unique way to say "I love you", check out Roses by Design's boxes of fresh rose petals, all personalised with your own choice of message. Scatter them on the table, or leave a trail of petals from the door to the dinner table, each with the words "follow me" printed on the front!
