Mother's Day celebrations can be found in history tracing all the way back to the Greeks, who celebrated Rhea, the mother of the gods, in spring ceremonies. In the 1600's, England began a tradition of “Mothering Sunday”, which was held on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This day started as one where the servants of England were able to take the day off and celebrate with their families, as many of England's poor at the time worked as servants. A “mothering cake” was often served, and over time this celebration morphed into one which also commemorated the Church (“Mother Church”) so that Mothering Sunday became a day of celebrating both mothers and the Church.
Mother's Day in the United States did not start until much later, when in 1872 Julia Ward Howe started celebrating the day as a day of peace, in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1907, the date of Mother's Day was fixed to the second Sunday in May, and now many other countries commemorate Mother's Day on that same date (such as Belgium, Denmark, Finland and Australia).
Mother's Day is one of the busiest times of year for florists, and every year millions of flower arrangements are sent to happy moms throughout the world. Mothers are often recipients of spring flowers, as well as the favorite rose, and flowers of all different colors and styles can be seen in these beautiful bouquets.
So, this year, remember your mom with flowers. She will be happy to see the thoughtful gesture and will remember your kindness forever. Whether you choose the traditional rose, or something different for your mother, make sure that you order your arrangement early so that it will get to her in time. Often, florists must charge extra to send flowers on the actual holiday, so think about sending those flowers a few days early. Besides, that way she can enjoy them the whole Mother's Day!
