Red Roses

The most popular rose in the world is the red rose. Whether you are giving someone a gift of flowers for their birthday, Valentine's Day or other special occasions, red roses make a great statement of your love and affection. A single red rose is a romantic gesture that will cheer up any woman's (or man's) day, and a gift of a dozen or more can show just how much you care.

According to most histories of flowers (as well as current beliefs), the red rose means love, specifically romantic love. Red roses are one of the most common symbols of Valentine's Day, along with hearts and chocolate, and they are often given to wives or girlfriends as a symbol of love and passion. When someone receives a red rose, one of the first things they might do is to sniff it. Most florists' roses are of the “hybrid tea” variety, which was created by cross-breeding different types of existing roses. More fragrant varieties of red roses are the Mister Lincoln and Chrysler Imperial. Even more scented are regular tea roses and the Victorian hybrid perpetual, but these flowers do not stand up as well to being arranged and used indoors.

Long stem red roses are a great choice for putting into vases and will hold up well to being indoors and in different climates. Generally, red roses will last around a week once cut, as long as you keep them in enough water. A special packet of “flower food” that is included with many floral arrangements can also help ensure longer life for your flowers. A beautiful way to display your roses is with a fern backdrop and a couple of sprigs of baby's breath, which is the typical way that roses are arranged. This simple look accents the beauty of the roses without taking away focus from them.
