Giving A Single Rose

The giving of a single rose is a practice that has long been popular and the gift of flowers has not only become synonymous with romantic holidays like Valentines Day but also as a gesture of love, friendship or care on birthdays, anniversaries and a great many other occasions. Of course, the giving of flowers doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions or for when a friend or family member is ill; every day is a good day for flowers. The poignancy and simplicity of a single rose is indicative of true love and literally means “I love you”.

The most traditional time to give a single rose is on Valentine’s Day. The rose is quite unique as far as gifts for loved ones go. The rule that less is more works equally as well as giving a dozen or even more roses. A single rose signifies love at first sight or that you still love someone whereas a dozen roses means “be mine”. On the other hand 15 roses means that you are truly sorry. Two dozen roses signifies “forever yours”. The number of roses you buy someone really does have a deep meaning.

The romantic gift of roses is steeped in history. Roman and Greek gods swore by roses and many mythological and fantastical stories include roses given as a gift of love. Cleopatra filled an entire room with rose petals when her love, Anthony, returned home. Since then poems have been penned, songs written and gifts given that all involve the rose in some way.

The red rose is the most popular and the most famous of all roses, even the word rose is believed by many to originate from the Roman word Rosa meaning red and this gives us a clear indication of why the red rose was chosen to signify love and why a single red rose has become so popular. However, in the same way that the number of roses you give conveys a particular message, so does the colour of the rose or roses. A red rose obviously signifies passionate love but did you know that a yellow rose indicates friendship or even jealousy? An orange rose indicates that someone is your secret love.

The gift of roses has become such an integral part of Valentine’s Day and other celebrations that many companies have adopted the form of the rose into their own gift ideas. As well as the floral rose, gold roses and other ornamental roses are also produced and given as gifts of love.

Single roses make the perfect birthday gift for the person you love and by personalising the rose with a simple but effective message, it can mean even more to the recipient. Wedding anniversaries are another occasion when a simple, single rose can be given as a sign of lasting love. Whatever the occasion and whoever the recipient, you can be sure that giving a single red rose will have the desired impact.
