Valentines Day - History, Romance Guide

Every year on February 14th we celebrate a day for love, exchange of gifts, promises of eternal love, and more. It is a day when we all show our love. And of course a day when all men give roses to women. But not only that. Besides giving roses to the one we love, we also offer candies, perfumes, balloons, red hearts, chocolates and much more. It is a day when we celebrate love.

But have you ever wondered where does Valentines Day come? Well, it all started from the Romans. For them the second month on the year heralded the coming to spring, a time for rejuvenation, fertility, and growth. It was the time when they honored the god of fertility, the one that they believed to ensure them with progeny and good crops. For the Romans, February 14th was the day when they honored Juno, the queen of Roman gods and goddesses. The next day, on February 15th they celebrated at the feast of Lupercalla. On the eve of Lupercalla a glass was filled with chits with the names of all eligible girls. Then, the young men would draw a chit each from the jar and the girl whose name was on the chit became his partner for the celebration.

Much later in the 3rd century BCE when Emperor Claudius II ruled Rome there lived a priest called Valentine. And when Claudius passed a decree that young men in his empire were not to marry, Valentine defied him and used to consecrate marriages secretly. He was sentenced to death and thrown into prison. While awaiting his execution Valentine penned a letter to his love and signed it “from your Valentine.” After his death Valentine became a martyr and saint and was popularly known as St Valentine. Since then, young men and women, children, as well as older couples created new ways to celebrate and declare their undying love.

Nowadays, we all see Valentines Day as the day to show our love. There are so many ways to do that. Yet, the most simple and popular one is to give roses to the one you love. Roses have endured as the traditional flower of Valentine's Day, and perhaps we also owe that to the Romans. The rose, which is undoubtedly the most popular flower in the world, speaks of love and has been the choice of lovers in every century. If you rearrange the letters of the word rose you get Eros, the god of Love. The color of roses is also important. Each color sends a message. For example, white roses are for true love and purity of the mind, yellow roses are for friendship, black ones for farewell, and pink roses mean sweetheart or friendship. Also, let’s not forget the most important color, the red roses, which are for love and passion.

So if you ever wonder what gift to give to the one you love on Valentines Day, just pick roses. You might say that it has become such a common thing to give roses. But do not forget that every woman loves roses. The way you give them to her is what makes the difference.
